a free online science fiction novel
by A. Warren Merkey
Introduction
How to entice you to read my story? I think it's unlike any other science fiction story you have read but that doesn't mean it's good. It's very long (~320k words) but neither does that mean it's good. There is some violence but that doesn't mean it's either good or bad. There is music, even opera. There is speculative science with slight pretentions toward "hard" science. It is politely and lightly philosophical. There is no explicit sex - sorry - but sex is definitely important to the story. There is adventure but it mostly takes the form of discovery: a journey toward understanding who the people are. Finally, it is not quite a romance but it is a love story - several of them.
This is how it begins:
What do you do when you have lost someone you love
and you must wait more than two centuries
before you can find them?
Fidelity Demba doesn't know she can sing.
She doesn't know she can love.
She doesn't know she can laugh and weep.
She doesn't know she is 287 years old.
Fidelity Demba is a Navy admiral.
She doesn't know why she wants to sail
on the Union Navy Starship Freedom.
She doesn't know she has set in motion
a chain of events
that will threaten all of humanity.
She has found an abandoned child
on the Forbidden Planet
who will make her know everything,
including who she really is.
Admiral Demba doesn't know she can sing.
